Getting Re-Booked: The Post-Event Follow-Up

Most speaking work comes from people who have already heard you. What you do in the 48 hours after an event decides whether they call again.

The talk ends, people thank you in the lobby, and you head for the airport. For many speakers that’s where the relationship ends too. But the organizer who just booked you is your best source of future invitations — next year’s event, a sister church, a friend on another planning team.

Within 24 hours: say thank you

  • Email the main organizer and anyone who served you directly — tech, hospitality, the volunteer who drove you.
  • Mention one specific moment: a conversation, a response from the room, something the team did well.
  • Keep it short. A thank-you that asks for something isn’t a thank-you.

Within a week: deliver what you promised

  • Send slides, notes, discussion questions, or resources you mentioned from the stage.
  • Send your invoice or expense receipts, if they apply, in one clear email.
  • Ask for a short testimonial: “Would you be willing to share two or three sentences about how the session went?”

Ask for honest feedback

One simple question invites useful answers: “What’s one thing that would make me even more helpful to an event like yours?” Organizers rarely get asked, and they remember speakers who do.

Make referrals easy

  • Send a link to your Sent Speakers profile so they can share it in one click.
  • Ask, without pressure: “If you know another church or group who might benefit, I’d be grateful for an introduction.”
  • Add new testimonials and photos from the event to your profile.

Stay in touch without being pushy

  • Put a reminder on your calendar 6–9 months out, when planning for next year usually starts.
  • Check in with something useful — an article, a prayer, an encouragement — not just a sales email.
  • Congratulate them on wins you see: a building project, a new staff hire, a strong year.

A simple thank-you template

“Thank you for having me at [event]. I loved [specific moment], and your team made me feel so welcome — especially [name]. I’ve attached the notes I promised. If you have a minute, I’d love to hear one thing that would make me more helpful next time. Grateful to have served with you.”
